Do you remember a television show called “Star Search?” It was first introduced to American
television viewers in 1993. Contestants, on this entertainment competition show, competed in
several genres. All the acts were judged by a panel of entertainers. Each week, one lucky
contestant would emerge as the winner (champion). The next week, the champion would
compete until they had a total of three consecutive wins. Before the season ended, all the triple
winners would compete for the grand prize.

In Asheboro and all of Randolph County, there is no shortage of talent. Thanks to the creative
genius of Jane Ledwell-Gant, Star Search was born in Asheboro. The first show was held at the
Sunset Theater in 2002. The call for tryouts was advertised in the Courier-Tribune. The entire
community was invited to come and showcase their talents. Auditions were held at the
Randolph County Arts Guild. In the first year, 40 talented contestants auditioned for a chance to
perform during the finale. Of the 40 who auditions, 20 contestants were invited to perform on
stage during the finale. Many different talents have been showcased. There have been singers
and bands, creative dance and cloggers, spoken word and poetry, and the list goes on and on.
Many adults and children have auditioned and ultimately performed for the grand prize. Some
have been fortunate to perform with Rhinoleap Productions, a local production company in
Asheboro, NC. One contestant has performed on ABC’s hit television performance show,
American Idol.
If you have a talent and you want to compete for a grand prize, auditions will be held on April 3-
5, 2023 at 7:00 pm. The grand finale will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023, at 7:00 pm. Auditions
and the grand finale will be held at the Clyde L. Foust Performing Arts Center located at 950
Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Asheboro.
