The George Washington Carver Community Enrichment Center (GWCCEC) is excited to introduce the Reginald and Mildred Womble Scholarship, a scholarship for high school seniors aiming to attend historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). This scholarship, rooted in a tradition of educational advocacy, aims to support students from Guilford, Randolph, and Chatham counties. The Reginald and Mildred Womble Scholarship will provide a one-time award of $2,500 to a student(s) who demonstrates academic excellence, community engagement, and a dedication to civic engagement.
A Legacy of Education

The scholarship was established by Regina Womble-Miller, daughter of Reginald and Mildred Womble, to continue her parents’ steadfast commitment to education. “My parents valued education greatly,” Womble-Miller shared. “Throughout their lives, they anonymously helped many students. They believed that any child eager to pursue further education should be able to do so without financial worries.”
The scholarship reflects the values the Wombles cherished, emphasizing the transformative power of learning. Reginald Womble, one of eight children, grew up in a household where higher education wasn’t optional but expected. In 1964, he earned a BS in Mathematics from NC A&T State University. He then pursued a 35-year career at Burlington Industries. Mildred Womble, a trailblazer herself, returned to NC A&T State University after raising her family, earning her degree in Early Childhood Education in 1980. She spent the rest of her career advocating for education at Regional Consolidated Services’ Head Start Program. “Education was a mandate in our family,” Womble-Miller explained. “My parents trusted me to create this scholarship and ensure their legacy would benefit others.”
The $2,500 scholarship is intended to ease the financial challenges faced by students beginning their college journeys. “This scholarship is about funding education. It’s about honoring my parents’ legacy, who believed deeply in the transformative power of learning and always sought to lift others.”
